It’s no great secret that exercise plays an important role in battling muscle soreness and tender points caused by fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).
Many sources suggest exercising as often as three to four times a week for 30 minutes for optimal benefit. Your exercise program for fibromyalgia should include gentle stretches to warm up the muscles, fascia, and connective tissue, gradually building to work the major muscle groups and to get an aerobic workout.
The two best exercises that fit this criteria are swimming in a heated pool, and yoga.
The trick is to exercise at the highest ability you’re capable of without causing a flare up. For most people with fibromyalgia, this is a difficult dance because it is often hard to differentiate when enough is enough.
My name is David Morgan, and I’m a yoga teacher. I’ve worked with a number of people with fibromyalgia, and yoga has been very helpful for them, not only to reduce muscle pain and tender points, but also to help them find their own "edge," that place where enough is enough. This is helpful not only when exercising, but also in life.
